The First Look: A Wedding Planner’s Perspective

As a wedding planner at Pure Joy Co., I’ve seen countless weddings and countless moments, but few are as intimate and emotional as the “First Look.” This private moment before the ceremony, where the couple sees each other for the first time, is one of my favorite traditions to recommend. Let me share why I love it and why you might consider it for your special day.

Why I Love the First Look

  1. Intimacy Without Distraction: A First Look allows you to have a moment that is just about the two of you. No distractions from bridesmaids, parents, or the environment. It’s a pure, undisturbed moment where you can fully absorb the emotions and excitement of seeing each other in your wedding attire for the first time.

  2. Emotions Are Still High at the Ceremony: Some brides worry that a First Look will take away from the emotion of walking down the aisle. In my experience, this isn’t the case. The emotions will always be different when it’s time to walk the aisle and say “I Do.” Many couples find that the First Look doesn’t diminish the tears, smiles, or joy of the ceremony.

  3. Efficient Use of Time: One of the biggest benefits of a First Look is the efficient use of time. After the First Look, you can jump right into bridal party photos and even family portraits. This allows you to enjoy your cocktail hour with your guests without the rush of squeezing in all the photos between the ceremony and reception. Plus, it frees up more time during the golden hour for those stunning sunset shots with your photographer.

  4. Maximizing Photography: If photography is a top priority for your wedding, a First Look gives your photographer more time to capture beautiful, candid moments without feeling rushed. This means you’ll likely end up with more photos to cherish.

Of course, every couple is different, and there are some reasons why a First Look might not be for everyone. Some couples feel that seeing each other before the ceremony takes away from the “butterflies” and heightened emotions of the actual moment when the bride walks down the aisle. This is a personal preference and something to consider. For some, the emotional reaction of parents and family members seeing you for the first time as you walk down the aisle is priceless. A First Look might alter this moment, though it doesn’t necessarily diminish the overall experience.

Ultimately, the decision to have a First Look is a personal one and should be based on what feels right for you as a couple. As a wedding planner, my goal is to help you create a day that is joyful, stress-free, and filled with beautiful memories. Whether you choose to have a First Look or not, the emotions and magic of your wedding day will be there.

Remember, your wedding day is about celebrating your love and commitment. Choose the traditions and moments that resonate with you and make your day uniquely yours.
