Things Not to DIY at Your Wedding

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and while DIY projects can be fun and personal, there are certain aspects of your wedding that are best left to the professionals. Here are key elements to consider:

1. Photography

I have personally experienced the heartbreak of brides and grooms relying on nieces or family friends to do their wedding photography for free. A year later, the couple still didn't have “all” of their photos and there was a high possibility they would never receive them. The last time I spoke with the couple, we concluded that either the photos didn't come out well, they were lost, or the amateur photographer was too focused on enjoying the wedding rather than capturing it. ALWAYS hire professional and trusted vendors for your events.

2. Wedding Favors for a Large Wedding

While it's lovely to put your personal touch on wedding favors, DIY projects for large weddings can be overwhelming. Do you really want to spend the night before your wedding pouring honey, placing stickers, and tying bows? Instead, consider skipping the wedding favors if you're on a budget and opting for thank you cards. Alternatively, hire a vendor for wedding favors, whether it's a local business or someone on Etsy. This will save you time and stress.

3. Wedding Cake

I can't emphasize this enough with my clients: do not DIY your wedding cake. If we're working within a budget, I agree we can cut costs by ordering a smaller cake from a local baker and serve guest with a sheet cake or cupcakes and cake. Also, Neither should you hire a relative for such an important task.. Let's avoid giving this responsibility to family members or ourselves the night and day of the wedding. Allow everyone to relax and enjoy the day.

4. Day Of Coordinator

Avoid DIY day-of coordination and don't expect parents or bridesmaids to set up personal items and follow up with vendors who might be running late. Instead, allow them to focus on enjoying the getting-ready time, doing makeup and hair, or taking pictures with you. They should be able to enjoy the cocktail hour and the entire celebration without worrying about what's missing at the reception before the guests arrive. While some couple prefer planning their own weddings and that’s understandable; but keep in mind that many venues and vendors will require you or recommend you having a Day Of Coordinator. This will allow you not only to enjoy your day but allow them to properly execute the services that they got hire for. NOTE: Venue Coordinators aren’t the same as Wedding Day Of Coordinators.
